SUMMARY:The Excavations at Angel Street And St John's Street
DESCRIPTION:Mark Holmes from Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) will be speaking about the large-scale excavations on Angel Street and St John’s Street in 2014\, uncovering a site which had been continuously occupied since the early 1100s. highlights include the discovery of a workshop where bone and antler chess pieces were carved in the 12th century\, and extensive evidence for later medieval malting and brewing. There will be an opportunity to view some of the original finds from their site. this talk is in partnership with MOLA and celebrates the Festival of Archaeology.

SUMMARY:The Story Of The Irchester Bowls
DESCRIPTION:The Irchester bowls were found in 1874 by the antiquarian the Rev. Baker. This remains an important and significant discovery of beautifully crafted bowls and strainers. They were buried in the late 300s making them over 1500 years old. The hoard is of regional and national significance and has been re-evaluated by Dr James Gerrard and Marci Romeo-Pitone of Newcastle University along with the Knaresborough hoard from Yorkshire. This includes exciting new metallurgical analysis using contemporary scientific study.  There are strong similarities between two hoards including  the story of how they were found. This study event will discuss the analysis and new research telling story of the hoard. In partnership with the Archaeological Resources Centre\, Chester House.

DESCRIPTION:Art history lecture series\nFriday 30 September – Friday 21 October\n10.15am – 12.15pm\n£6 per lecture or £20 for the whole series ticket (includes tea/coffee and biscuits)\nEnactment\, the public display of theatre and makebelieve\, have long been part of human social and religious interaction\, fostering communal participation and understanding as well as different forms of interpretations and ways of seeing. Join us as we explore four distinctly different phases of public display and storytelling through the art historian’s eye. Our journey starts with the enactments of medieval mystery plays\, halts at the Italian Commedia dell’Arte and its importance particularly for the arts of Rococo Europe\, reaching its apogee in exploring how William Hogarth and Richard Garrick immortalized the theatre. Our final session will address the use of art in the theatre of war. Please note that this lecture series runs in conjunction with the current exhibition at Abington Park Museum which until December 2022 charts the history of Northampton’s Masque theatre group.\nBooking essential.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday 12 November\n10.30am – 12.30pm\n£12 including all materials\nLearn a historic quilting technique using simple stitches which can be used as a standalone technique\, or in combination with other embroidery stitches\, to add texture to your traditional or contemporary creations. In this workshop Sharn will briefly outline the history of corded quilting\, including showing a 250-year-old example from the museum’s collection. She will then help participants produce a small sample in a ‘sew along’ session that can be used to make a Christmas card. The workshop will conclude with ideas of how to combine corded quilting with other sewing techniques and which designs work best.\nThis workshop is suitable for both people with limited stitch experience and more experienced embroiderers looking to add to their technique library.
