DESCRIPTION:Art history lecture series\nFriday 30 September – Friday 21 October\n10.15am – 12.15pm\n£6 per lecture or £20 for the whole series ticket (includes tea/coffee and biscuits)\nEnactment\, the public display of theatre and makebelieve\, have long been part of human social and religious interaction\, fostering communal participation and understanding as well as different forms of interpretations and ways of seeing. Join us as we explore four distinctly different phases of public display and storytelling through the art historian’s eye. Our journey starts with the enactments of medieval mystery plays\, halts at the Italian Commedia dell’Arte and its importance particularly for the arts of Rococo Europe\, reaching its apogee in exploring how William Hogarth and Richard Garrick immortalized the theatre. Our final session will address the use of art in the theatre of war. Please note that this lecture series runs in conjunction with the current exhibition at Abington Park Museum which until December 2022 charts the history of Northampton’s Masque theatre group.\nBooking essential.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday 12 November\n10.30am – 12.30pm\n£12 including all materials\nLearn a historic quilting technique using simple stitches which can be used as a standalone technique\, or in combination with other embroidery stitches\, to add texture to your traditional or contemporary creations. In this workshop Sharn will briefly outline the history of corded quilting\, including showing a 250-year-old example from the museum’s collection. She will then help participants produce a small sample in a ‘sew along’ session that can be used to make a Christmas card. The workshop will conclude with ideas of how to combine corded quilting with other sewing techniques and which designs work best.\nThis workshop is suitable for both people with limited stitch experience and more experienced embroiderers looking to add to their technique library. This series explores the history of the artist’s print\, a subject that leaves lasting impressions to this day\, and runs alongside Northampton Museum and Art Gallery’s exhibition showcasing the works of print-maker John McGowan.\nLectures will focus on an artwork from the museum’s art collection\, providing either an exclusive chance to view it or highlighting works on display. Drawing on over 23 years’ experience as a traditionally educated boot- and shoemaker and professional historian\, Mr. Walker presents an engaging look at what was one of the most common skilled trades in Great Britain. Highlights will include examples of shoes within the collection of the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery\, and previously unpublished information on contemporary calceology discoveries.
