DESCRIPTION:Explore the history of gladiatorial fights in Britain. \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe events of the amphitheatre – its wild beasts and enslaved fighters – are one of the most enduring aspects of Roman culture that still capture the public imagination today. \nThis touring exhibition brings together some of the country’s most important objects to tell the story of Britain’s entertainment venues and the people who died to the roar of the crowd. It will reveal the violence of the arena\, and the importance of spectacle within Roman culture. \nHighlights include the Colchester Vase loaned by Colchester Museums\, which records an actual battle between two real gladiators\, and the Hawkedon Helmet\, the only confirmed piece of gladiatorial armour from Roman Britain. These iconic loans will be supported by a selection of other items that reveal the popularity of gladiators throughout Roman society. \nThis tour is in partnership with Colchester and Ipswich Museums and is inspired by the recent exhibition at Colchester Castle\, Gladiators: A Day at the Roman Games which featured British Museum loans. It will explore Roman spectacle in the local region\, following in the footsteps of the gladiators who fought in the amphitheatres of Britain.

DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Stitched Textiles \nThe Bassett-Lowke Rooms \n\n\nSat 8 Mar 2025 – Sun 25 May 2025 \n\n\n\nAn exhibition of Contemporary Stitched Art Textiles \nWe are delighted to be hosting this new exhibition of textiles and mixed media work which has been created by the Visualise textile group. Visualise was formed several years ago\, by like-minded artists who enjoy creating diverse work with stitch as the common thread. \nThe exhibition will also feature work by internationally known textile artist and Embroiderers Guild member Nigel Cheney who is the current mentor to Visualise. \nOn display is a diverse array of abstract\, realistic and figurative art using a wide variety of media: paper\, fabric (new\, distressed and recycled) and found objects which are hand and machine stitched\, or felted to create art inspired by both the natural world and the built environment. \nThe exhibition includes textile art inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and 78 Derngate itself\, with framed and small items for sale. \nCombining a look round the iconic Charles Rennie Mackintosh House before visiting the exhibition\, gardens and shop\, followed by partaking of some drink or food in The Dining Room is the perfect way to spend a glorious few hours in Northampton town. \nThere will be some ‘Meet the Artists’ days during the exhibition\, details as yet to be announced. \nThe members meet regularly in Welford\, Northamptonshire\, with the aim of promoting creativity through rigorous discipline\, underpinned by an interest in the history of textiles worldwide. \nOpening on Saturday 8th March until Sunday 25th May 2025\, closed Mondays\n10am- 4.30 pm – free admission to galleries\, shop and cafe. \nhttps://www.visualise.online/

DESCRIPTION:The UK’s biggest country music export The Shires have announced an intimate acoustic tour for 2025. The two of us tour will see Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes tour the length and breadth of the UK performing all their classic tracks. \nThe Shires achievements speak for themselves: three consecutive UK Top 3 albums\, four #1 UK Country albums\, 100 million+ streams\, two Gold-certified records\, and countless sold-out headline shows\, including filling the prestigious Royal Albert Hall. \nThe Shires first broke through in 2014 with their single Nashville Grey Skies\, a playful song about Britain needing its own country scene. And that’s something which they helped happen\, starting with their 2015 debut Brave\, which became the first ever Top 10 album by a UK country music artist. That success continued with a succession of hit albums: 2016’s My Universe\, 2018’s Accidentally On Purpose\, 2020’s Good Years and 2022’s 10 Year Plan. \nTheir authenticity saw them embraced by the Nashville scene immediately\, leading to two CMA Awards\, touring highlights including C2C Festival and shows as guests to Carrie Underwood\, Little Big Town\, The Corrs and more.
