SUMMARY:Heritage Open Days Tour
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Open Days Tour\n\nWill be held on Saturday 13th September & Wednesday 17th September 2025\nFirst tour at 10:00 am\, last tour at 3:00 pm\n\nThis is a free event \n\nThe Old Savoy and The  Deco Theatre are now one of Northampton’s premier venues available for hire for theatrical productions\, conferences\, meetings\, wedding receptions\, parties and other social or corporate events\, and although it certainly didn’t start that way when it was first built\, it has always been a home of family entertainment.\n\nThe building first opened on Saturday 2 May 1936 in a blaze of publicity as “the Savoy”\, described as “Northampton’s only super Cinema” and reported to be “the last word in comfort”. It was part of the ABC group\, designed by their prolific house architect WR Glen and built in under nine months on the site of the original Technical College. It was constructed in the International Modernistic style and is arguably the best remaining example of Glen’s work\, with all the main features still in place and sympathetically renovated.\n\nThe Savoy was very popular and originally held almost 2000 people in the 696 seat circle and 1200 seat stalls. It was designed both as a cinema and theatre complete with orchestra pit. It hosted shows and concerts as well as films.\n\nIn the 1950s it was renamed the ‘ABC’ in line with the group’s national branding policy and was the local venue of choice for the touring bands of the ’60s\, including the Beatles in both March and November 1963\, the Rolling Stones in 1965 and infamously PJ Proby in 1965\, when he was arrested for splitting his trousers on stage!\n\nA number of the ’60s bands have returned to play The Deco Theatre in recent years\, including the Hollies\, the Searchers and Billy J Kramer.\n\nIn 1974\, it was converted to a three-screen complex by using the rear of the stalls with a dividing wall for the 2 smaller screens and leaving the main auditorium circle as the main ‘ABC 1’.\n\nBy the mid-’90s\, however\, the ABC now renamed Cannon cinema was unable to compete with the modern multi-screen complexes and it finally closed its doors in 1995 with the appropriately named “Terminal Velocity”.\n\nThe building was derelict for five years until 2000 when it was converted to a multi-purpose venue opening in October 2004.

SUMMARY:NN NIGHTS
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 31 August 2025 | 2 pm–9 pm | Various Locations\, Northampton \nNN Contemporary Art is thrilled to announce the return of NN Nights\, a vibrant\, town-wide celebration of arts and culture\, taking place on Sunday\, 31 August 2025. Following the success of last year’s event\, this edition promises to be bigger and bolder\, featuring over 50 artists presenting exhibitions\, performances\, and participatory projects across Northampton. NN Nights was devised in 2024 by NN Associates\, a professional development programme initiated by NN Contemporary Art\, aiming to foster creative skills and community in the town. This year’s event\, proudly built on the work established by NN Associates\, now marks a significant fixture in Northampton’s cultural calendar. \n“We are excited to bring NN Nights back for another year of creativity\, collaboration\, and community engagement\,†said Richard Harrison\, one of the event’s producers. “The event has grown significantly\, and we can’t wait to share the incredible talent and energy of our local artists with the community once again.†\nThe festivities will kick off with the Lightning Bolt Drawing World Championship by Northampton-based artist Bill Pollard at the Racecourse. In this community-focused event\, participants are invited to draw chalk lightning bolts on the pavement in a celebration of collective creativity. From here\, visitors are invited to explore the NN Nights art map trail\, a curated series of exhibitions and performances taking place at partner venues throughout Northampton. This year’s edition features a series of artist projects commissioned through a town-wide open call\, some responding to the anniversary of The Great Fire of Northampton. Among them\, Michelle Woolley presents a performative walk through the town\, creating a shamanic drawing from burnt materials that reflects on medieval English heritage and fire traces. \nSee all the events\, the trail and the interactive map at https://nnights.xyz/ \nOther Programme Highlights Include: \nWatch a Garden Grow\, organised by artist-curator Richard Harrison\, is a temporary outdoor group show inspired by a Derek Jarman painting\, Landscape with Marble Mountain in the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery collection. The exhibition is structured by a public participatory chalk-flower drawing event by Bill Pollard\, which will evolve into a ‘secret garden’ throughout the day. Other contributing artists include Macy Wong Prior\, Madeleine Wilkie\, Dinosaur Kilby\, Leah Hickey\, Kristina Hall\, Sophie Mackfall\, Ethan Caflisch\, Johanna De Verdier\, Campbell McConnell\, Ciara Callaghan\, Joe Highton and Shepherd Manyika. \nThe event will debut the ‘We Used To Be Friends’ Bar\, a new participatory public artwork and pop-up installation by artist and designer Giles Round. Situated beneath a pink neon sign\, the bar created in partnership with Queer Brewery\,  intervenes in spaces coded by heteronormative nostalgia. A collaborative\, specially-editioned beer will be on sale for the duration of the event\,  temporarily activating the Giles Round-designed kiosk bar space at 24 Guildhall Road before opening fully in the new year. \nLandscape photographer James Smith’s exhibition A Study of New and Expanded Towns of Southeast England and Memorability as an Image\, inspired by Rayner Banham’s theory of New Brutalism\, will open at Photomafia Studios. \nLocal wine bar V & B will host three presentations: in the courtyard space\, Merlin Summers will show ‘Mr. Reece. I. Kul’\, a sculptural performance composed of found and repurposed materials; photographer Maksim Podorozkin’s work chronicles the town’s industrial architecture\, whilst NN/A present Gleam\, a group show of new work and live painting exploring light as both subject and medium. \nFrom 7 pm\, Coconut Paradise Cafe will be serving drinks and their signature Caribbean cooking with DJs to keep the party going into the evening. \nNN Nights 2025 is generously supported by Arts Council England\, Click Arts Foundation\, Northampton Town Council\, pHp Architects\, Michael Jones Jeweller\, Yellow Bourbon Coffee Roasters \nMore information on all of the events\, along with information about NN\, can be found at: www.nncontemporaryart.org. \n \nÂ

SUMMARY:Gladiators of Britain
DESCRIPTION:Explore the history of gladiatorial fights in Britain. \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe events of the amphitheatre – its wild beasts and enslaved fighters – are one of the most enduring aspects of Roman culture that still capture the public imagination today. \nThis touring exhibition brings together some of the country’s most important objects to tell the story of Britain’s entertainment venues and the people who died to the roar of the crowd. It will reveal the violence of the arena\, and the importance of spectacle within Roman culture. \nHighlights include the Colchester Vase loaned by Colchester Museums\, which records an actual battle between two real gladiators\, and the Hawkedon Helmet\, the only confirmed piece of gladiatorial armour from Roman Britain. These iconic loans will be supported by a selection of other items that reveal the popularity of gladiators throughout Roman society. \nThis tour is in partnership with Colchester and Ipswich Museums and is inspired by the recent exhibition at Colchester Castle\, Gladiators: A Day at the Roman Games which featured British Museum loans. It will explore Roman spectacle in the local region\, following in the footsteps of the gladiators who fought in the amphitheatres of Britain.
