SUMMARY:The History of The Performing Room Building
DESCRIPTION:Explore the deep hidden history of the building. Step back in time to hear the story and discover how heritage helped to create Northampton’s beautiful Culture Quarter through public exhibitions and immersive multimedia utilising VR technology. \nThe Performing Room have worked on a multimedia heritage project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to uncover and share the hidden history of the historical building\, first built as Franklin’s Hotel and Restaurant in 1872 by John Campbell Franklin to capitalise on railway passengers traveling to the new St John’s Street Railway Station from the new rail route built between Bedford and Northampton. For decades\, it served as the meeting point for merchants\, traders and other travellers coming to Northampton. \nAn impressive list of artefacts dating back to when the building was first built characterises the relationship between Franklin’s hotel and the people who used to work there and visit it. A quick tour of the picture galleries\, display stands\, glass cabinets and slideshows include authentic old newspapers\, vintage bottles\, champagne corks\, war memorabilia\, decorative ceramic floor tiles\, an original train ticket used to transport people to St John’s and more. \nOther projects consist of a documentary\, cartoon animations\, children board games\, lego reconstructions of old buildings and a digital tour with 3-D modelling. \nEach offer you the chance to step back in time and experience what life would have been like for people at the time. \n\nSaturday 13 September: 12pm – 5pm\nSunday 14 September: 12pm – 5pm\nFriday 19 September: 12pm – 5pm\nSaturday 20 September: 12pm – 5pm

SUMMARY:From the Collection: Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, landscape was considered an unworthy subject for serious artistic exploration. \nNorthampton Museum & Art Gallery \nUntil Sunday 4 October \nWhen landscape did appear in paintings\, it was often relegated to the background—merely a setting for religious or historical scenes. \nThis perception began to shift in the 17th century with the work of Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain. These pioneering artists crafted idealised rural vistas to illustrate the myths of Ancient Greece and Rome\, imbuing natural elements with metaphorical meaning. Through their romantic and structured visions of the countryside\, landscape painting began to gain recognition as a meaningful art form. \nIt was not until the 19th century\, however\, that landscape truly came into its own. Artists such as J.M.W. Turner and John Constable redefined the genre\, capturing the drama\, emotion\, and grandeur of the natural world. Their work affirmed landscape as a powerful subject in its own right—one that continues to inspire artists to this day. \nDrawing from the museum collections\, this exhibition explores the evolution of landscape painting\, where nature takes centre stage. \nÂ

SUMMARY:Heritage Open Days Tour
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Open Days Tour\n\nWill be held on Saturday 13th September & Wednesday 17th September 2025\nFirst tour at 10:00 am\, last tour at 3:00 pm\n\nThis is a free event \n\nThe Old Savoy and The  Deco Theatre are now one of Northampton’s premier venues available for hire for theatrical productions\, conferences\, meetings\, wedding receptions\, parties and other social or corporate events\, and although it certainly didn’t start that way when it was first built\, it has always been a home of family entertainment.\n\nThe building first opened on Saturday 2 May 1936 in a blaze of publicity as “the Savoy”\, described as “Northampton’s only super Cinema” and reported to be “the last word in comfort”. It was part of the ABC group\, designed by their prolific house architect WR Glen and built in under nine months on the site of the original Technical College. It was constructed in the International Modernistic style and is arguably the best remaining example of Glen’s work\, with all the main features still in place and sympathetically renovated.\n\nThe Savoy was very popular and originally held almost 2000 people in the 696 seat circle and 1200 seat stalls. It was designed both as a cinema and theatre complete with orchestra pit. It hosted shows and concerts as well as films.\n\nIn the 1950s it was renamed the ‘ABC’ in line with the group’s national branding policy and was the local venue of choice for the touring bands of the ’60s\, including the Beatles in both March and November 1963\, the Rolling Stones in 1965 and infamously PJ Proby in 1965\, when he was arrested for splitting his trousers on stage!\n\nA number of the ’60s bands have returned to play The Deco Theatre in recent years\, including the Hollies\, the Searchers and Billy J Kramer.\n\nIn 1974\, it was converted to a three-screen complex by using the rear of the stalls with a dividing wall for the 2 smaller screens and leaving the main auditorium circle as the main ‘ABC 1’.\n\nBy the mid-’90s\, however\, the ABC now renamed Cannon cinema was unable to compete with the modern multi-screen complexes and it finally closed its doors in 1995 with the appropriately named “Terminal Velocity”.\n\nThe building was derelict for five years until 2000 when it was converted to a multi-purpose venue opening in October 2004.
