Milestones
– 78 Derngate was first listed in 1965.
– Cheyne Walk Club – there has been a few milestones in the Club’s history.
- In 1963 membership numbers peaked at 1,049. The prices at the bar had to go up – whisky 2/3d, gin 2/ 1d, and a pint of Phipps NBC beer 1/ 9d. (When the club opened in 1929 a pint of Phipps was 3d and a quart 5d!)
- In 1967 wage inflation was such that waiting staff would not work for the then going rate of 3/ 6d an hour and they had to pay 4/ an hour.
- Also in 1967 a squash player entered the bar without wearing a tie!
- It was also when Northampton was designated a ‘new town’ and in 1969 the Northampton Gaslight Company offices were demolished to build the new Marks and Spencer’s store on Abington St.
