Spotlight on mental health support at Northampton Market Square

Residents are invited to Northampton’s Market Square on Saturday 17 May, from 10am to 2pm, for a special event to mark Mental Health Awareness Week, bringing together a wide range of local charities and organisations. The event aims to raise awareness of the mental health and wellbeing services available to people of all ages across the area and is part of a series of actions led by the Northampton Town Centre Task Group to support workers, businesses, and the wider community. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet with teams from organisations such as Action for Happiness, The Lowdown, Samaritans, Healthwatch, Futures Housing, Orbit, and many more. Public Health colleagues will also be promoting upcoming mental health and suicide prevention training sessions specifically aimed at local businesses. Contemporary Stitched Textiles The Bassett-Lowke Rooms Sat 8 Mar 2025 - Sun 25 May 2025 An exhibition of Contemporary Stitched Art Textiles We are delighted to be hosting this new exhibition of textiles and mixed media work which has been created by the Visualise textile group. Visualise was formed several years ago, by like-minded artists who enjoy creating diverse work with stitch as the common thread. The exhibition will also feature work by internationally known textile artist and Embroiderers Guild member Nigel Cheney who is the current mentor to Visualise. On display is a diverse array of abstract, realistic and figurative art using a wide variety of media: paper, fabric (new, distressed and recycled) and found objects which are hand and machine stitched, or felted to create art inspired by both the natural world and the built environment. The exhibition includes textile art inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and 78 Derngate itself, with framed and small items for sale. Combining a look round the iconic Charles Rennie Mackintosh House before visiting the exhibition, gardens and shop, followed by partaking of some drink or food in The Dining Room is the perfect way to spend a glorious few hours in Northampton...

Get ready for a showcase of the most hilariously bad album art ever created! The Worst Record Covers in the World exhibition features collector Steve Goldman’s unique selection of over 500 unintentionally awful record sleeves. From bizarre design choices to laugh-out-loud concepts gone wrong, this exhibition celebrates creative risk and the joy of failure in art. Visitors can even listen to tracks from these records and vote for their favourite “worst” cover. Admission is free — come for the cringe, stay for the comedy!

Carnegie Talk – The Beautiful Art of Lacemaking

The talk will cover some of the history of lacemaking ahow it came to the Midlands region to make Northamptonshire a lacemaking area. Barbara Potter will cover some of the history of lacemaking; how it came to the Midlands region to make Northamptonshire a lacemaking area. The time span covers from the 1500's to the present day. Barbara is going to speak about the different types of lace being made in this area; the equipment needed to make the lace and the people who would be making it in the past and now. She will also mention other lacemaking regions eg Devon, Essex, Cumbria and Ireland and how they differ from lace made in this region. Finally, Barbara will bring her talk up to date and speak about lacemaking today and Nene Lacemakers in particular. As a bonus Barbara will bring a pillow on which you could try lacemaking if you wish to do so. Multi-award-winning saxophonist has joined forces with two of the UK’s premier jazz artists, Simon Thorpe and Colin Oxley together with special guest Darren Beckett. Their music reflects a shared love of creative interplay and improvisation together with a deep respect for the jazz tradition demonstrated with exquisite tunes by the likes of Steve Swallow, Bill Evans, Jobim, Jim Hall and Simon Thorpe.
