Heritage Open Days 2025

Heritage Open Days is back from the 12th - 21st September and promises to be bigger and better than ever! What to expect Heritage Open Days is a fantastic opportunity to explore some of Northamptonshire’s unique historic buildings and sites. Many of these sites are usually restricted access or charge for entry – but for the event they will be open and free of charge, allowing you to find out about the area’s vibrant culture and heritage like never before! Heritage Buses Northampton’s beloved heritage double-decker buses are back, running from George Row on 20th and 21st September - a perfect way to explore the town in vintage style. Keep an eye on this page for route and timetable updates, and look out for printed schedules at Northampton Museum and library soon. The classic buses will also be returning to Daventry on 13th September, after being such a crowd-pleaser last year. Don’t miss your chance to hop on and enjoy the ride! From the Collection: Landscapes

Northampton Museum And Art Gallery 4-6 Guildhall Rd,, Northampton

For centuries, landscape was considered an unworthy subject for serious artistic exploration. Northampton Museum & Art Gallery Until Sunday 4 October When landscape did appear in paintings, it was often relegated to the background—merely a setting for religious or historical scenes. This perception began to shift in the 17th century with the work of Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain. These pioneering artists crafted idealised rural vistas to illustrate the myths of Ancient Greece and Rome, imbuing natural elements with metaphorical meaning. Through their romantic and structured visions of the countryside, landscape painting began to gain recognition as a meaningful art form. It was not until the 19th century, however, that landscape truly came into its own. Artists such as J.M.W. Turner and John Constable redefined the genre, capturing the drama, emotion, and grandeur of the natural world. Their work affirmed landscape as a powerful subject in its own right—one that continues to inspire artists to this day. Drawing from the museum collections, this exhibition explores the evolution of landscape painting, where nature takes centre stage.

Architecture students from Northampton College have been reimagining Northampton, taking an existing heritage asset and suggesting how it could be transformed with heart and, of course, imagination! The students’ work will be on display in the café at Northampton Museum & Art Gallery for the duration of the festival, linking to exhibitions featuring the county town elsewhere in the museum. Great Fire of Northampton Walking Trail

The Great Fire of Northampton in 1675 destroyed much of the town centre – a walking trail will take participants around the centre of the town to see some of the affected buildings and how the town was rebuilt, while learning more about this year’s 350th anniversary commemoration. Trail leaflets will be available from Northampton Museum & Art Gallery, Northampton Central Library, and the Discover Northamptonshire Tourism Hub at Rushden Lakes.

Northampton Museum & Art Gallery Saturday 20 September - Sunday 22 February 2026 This exhibition has been shaped by an extraordinary network of 51 guest curators from across the county, each bringing their own expertise and local knowledge to the project. These dedicated individuals, from historians and collectors to community groups, have worked alongside the museum team to select objects and craft narratives. Their collaborative efforts ensure this exhibition truly reflects the breadth of Northamptonshire's heritage, guided by those who know their communities best.

350th anniversary of the Great Fire of Northampton – Finale Event

The 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of Northampton will be marked with a special event in Market Square to round off a week-long series of free activities across the town.The finale of a busy events programme will be held on Saturday, 20 September, with an activity day in Market Square from 11am to 7.30pm, to be followed by a service at All Saints’ Church at 7.30pm featuring guests including Rev Richard Coles.A big screen will show a specially commissioned animation by Northampton Film Festival and The Creative Place. The film is the result of a project involving hundreds of local people answering the question, if Northampton burnt down again tomorrow, what would people save, what would people rebuild first and what would make it feel like our Northampton again?Local children have contributed drawings to the animation, local animators have shared their skills and market-goers have shared their thoughts through workshops, vox pops and on the ideas wall at The Creative Place. The resulting film will premiere at 1.30pm.Throughout the day there will be an extended version of The Creative Place’s Makers Market featuring artisan producers and creatives, a bar by V&B, a performance from the Bach choir and displays...

The History of The Performing Room Building

The Performing Room 9 Guildhall Road, Northampton

Explore the deep hidden history of the building. Step back in time to hear the story and discover how heritage helped to create Northampton’s beautiful Culture Quarter through public exhibitions and immersive multimedia utilising VR technology. The Performing Room have worked on a multimedia heritage project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to uncover and share the hidden history of the historical building, first built as Franklin’s Hotel and Restaurant in 1872 by John Campbell Franklin to capitalise on railway passengers traveling to the new St John’s Street Railway Station from the new rail route built between Bedford and Northampton. For decades, it served as the meeting point for merchants, traders and other travellers coming to Northampton. An impressive list of artefacts dating back to when the building was first built characterises the relationship between Franklin’s hotel and the people who used to work there and visit it. A quick tour of the picture galleries, display stands, glass cabinets and slideshows include authentic old newspapers, vintage bottles, champagne corks, war memorabilia, decorative ceramic floor tiles, an original train ticket used to transport people to St John’s and more. Tipping Point – Luke Jerram

An artwork by Luke Jerram, with surround sound audio by Dan Jones Hazel and Thoroughsale Woods Corby Northamptonshire NN17 1QG 19 – 21 September 2025 Fermynwoods Contemporary Art is thrilled to announce the upcoming presentation of Tipping Point, a powerful new work by internationally renowned artist Luke Jerram. Showcased in the largest ancient urban woodland in the UK, at the heart of Corby town centre, Northamptonshire this September, Tipping Point uses immersive light, smoke, and sound to simulate the drama of a forest fire. The installation features a bespoke soundtrack created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones, which includes the sounds of burning trees, whirring chainsaws, and fleeing animals, alongside ambient, melancholic music and moving global testimonies from individuals who have experienced wildfires. The work will be unveiled from 8pm to 9:30pm on the evenings of 19, 20 and 21 September. As part of the project, visitors will have the opportunity to find information about local environmental action, including North Northants Council’s work on increasing tree canopy cover and habitat preservation.
