Carnegie Talk – The Beautiful Art of Lacemaking

The talk will cover some of the history of lacemaking ahow it came to the Midlands region to make Northamptonshire a lacemaking area. Barbara Potter will cover some of the history of lacemaking; how it came to the Midlands region to make Northamptonshire a lacemaking area. The time span covers from the 1500's to the present day. Barbara is going to speak about the different types of lace being made in this area; the equipment needed to make the lace and the people who would be making it in the past and now. She will also mention other lacemaking regions eg Devon, Essex, Cumbria and Ireland and how they differ from lace made in this region. Finally, Barbara will bring her talk up to date and speak about lacemaking today and Nene Lacemakers in particular. As a bonus Barbara will bring a pillow on which you could try lacemaking if you wish to do so.
