Northampton Town & County Art Society presents its 107th annual show with a selection of members and non-members' artwork. The annual show features the works of professional and celebrated local artists, this year’s exhibition will again feature works by non-society members which bring an exciting edge to an already popular show, and adds to the rich variety of styles and media from the cream of Northamptonshire artists. London-based Swiss pianist, composer and singer Fabienne Ambuehl leads a quartet that is rhythmically compelling, lyrical and evocative. Her lyrical jazz takes the listener from the calm of mountain landscapes deep into the buzz of city life. Ambuehl’s compositions have a striking energy and dynamism while also painting details with a subtle brush. Her vocals sweep across wide emotional terrain, using her own lyrics as well as poems by Emily Dickinson, D.H. Lawrence and others. Working with Matt Ridley (The Antidote, The Darius Brubeck Quartet) and Jon Scott (Mulatu Astatke, GoGo Penguin), and Ant Law (Trio HLK, Same Moon in the Same World, Brigitte Beraha), three of the most experienced and in demand musicians on the London scene, Ambuehl’s music explores a variety of colour and texture with clearly communicated ideas and alert interaction within the band. Seven months ago, Saba walked out of her GCSE mocks and didn’t come back. Her friends don’t understand why. Now, on prom night, Saba’s finally made contact, challenging her friends to track her down via a series of cryptic clues. But when the friends are finally reunited, Saba is different. The way she sees the world has changed. And what she’s asking of her friends… is it more than they can give? This new play written by Danusia Samal, directed by Anna Simpson, and performed by the Royal & Derngate Young Company, asks probing questions about the responsibility of the individual in a troubled globalised world, as well as growing up, growing apart, and how far should you go for what you think is right. The Young Company will also be performing Saba’s Swim as part of the National Theatre Connections Festival.
