Visualise was formed several years ago, by like-minded artists who enjoy creating diverse work with stitch as the common thread. The exhibition will also feature work by internationally known textile artist and Embroiderers Guild member Nigel Cheney who is the current mentor to Visualise. On display is a diverse array of abstract, realistic and figurative art using a wide variety of media: paper, fabric (new, distressed and recycled) and found objects which are hand and machine stitched, or felted to create art inspired by both the natural world and the built environment. The exhibition includes textile art inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and 78 Derngate itself, with framed and small items for sale. Brian Bilston and Henry Normal appear together for the first time in a show which one critic has described as ‘two people reading some poems’. Along the way, they will be drawing on their vast catalogue of crowd favourites – and throwing in new poems, to prevent becoming their own tribute bands. Not ones to overpromise, Brian and Henry are prepared to commit to delivering the greatest poetry show in the history of the world: an evening of poems to be enjoyed, not endured. Brian Bilston has been described as the Banksy of poetry and Twitter’s unofficial Poet Laureate. With over 200,000 followers on social media, Brian has become truly beloved by the online community. Henry Normal is a writer, poet, TV and film producer, founder of the Manchester Poetry Festival (now the Literature Festival) and co-founder of the Nottingham Poetry Festival. BEACH SAND REVISITED by Ian Wilson. Last year we looked at beach sand and concentrated on the Foraminifera. This year we will look more closely at other organisms likely to be found in beach sand, molluscs, bryozoans, ostracods and others. There will be a range of sand samples to look at under the microscope and, hopefully you will be inspired to collect some sand if you are visiting a beach over the summer.

Visualise was formed several years ago, by like-minded artists who enjoy creating diverse work with stitch as the common thread. The exhibition will also feature work by internationally known textile artist and Embroiderers Guild member Nigel Cheney who is the current mentor to Visualise. On display is a diverse array of abstract, realistic and figurative art using a wide variety of media: paper, fabric (new, distressed and recycled) and found objects which are hand and machine stitched, or felted to create art inspired by both the natural world and the built environment. Please note the date of this performance has been moved from Fri 14 March Ahir Shah presents his award-winning stand-up show Ends. The show spans six decades, three generations, and two continents, synthesising past and present in search of hope for the future. It’s funnier than it sounds, honestly. Loads of absolutely cracking gags. Ends was first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe. Starting as a work-in-progress show, it became the word-of-mouth hit of the festival, culminating in Shah winning the 2023 Sky Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show. Since then, Ends enjoyed 5 sold-out weeks at London’s Soho Theatre, and has been performed at both the prestigious Royal Court Theatre and the Netflix Is A Joke Festival in Los Angeles. Residents are invited to Northampton’s Market Square on Saturday 17 May, from 10am to 2pm, for a special event to mark Mental Health Awareness Week, bringing together a wide range of local charities and organisations. The event aims to raise awareness of the mental health and wellbeing services available to people of all ages across the area and is part of a series of actions led by the Northampton Town Centre Task Group to support workers, businesses, and the wider community. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet with teams from organisations such as Action for Happiness, The Lowdown, Samaritans, Healthwatch, Futures Housing, Orbit, and many more. Public Health colleagues will also be promoting upcoming mental health and suicide prevention training sessions specifically aimed at local businesses. Visualise was formed several years ago, by like-minded artists who enjoy creating diverse work with stitch as the common thread. The exhibition will also feature work by internationally known textile artist and Embroiderers Guild member Nigel Cheney who is the current mentor to Visualise. On display is a diverse array of abstract, realistic and figurative art using a wide variety of media: paper, fabric (new, distressed and recycled) and found objects which are hand and machine stitched, or felted to create art inspired by both the natural world and the built environment. The exhibition includes textile art inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and 78 Derngate itself, with framed and small items for sale. Barbara Potter will cover some of the history of lacemaking; how it came to the Midlands region to make Northamptonshire a lacemaking area. The time span covers from the 1500's to the present day. Barbara is going to speak about the different types of lace being made in this area; the equipment needed to make the lace and the people who would be making it in the past and now. She will also mention other lacemaking regions eg Devon, Essex, Cumbria and Ireland and how they differ from lace made in this region. Finally, Barbara will bring her talk up to date and speak about lacemaking today and Nene Lacemakers in particular. Cameron is thirteen, and all he wants is to be normal – have friends, go to school, and dive to the bottom of his local swimming pool. But he desperately needs a heart transplant and time is running out. When he’s finally offered a new heart, Cameron must choose how far he’ll go to get his life back. With special guest, six-times World Champion Steve Davis giving an after-dinner speech, and the incredibly talented Mark Allen playing an exhibition set, this is a unique chance to enjoy a three-course dinner and watch one of the world’s biggest snooker stars in action. Visualise was formed several years ago, by like-minded artists who enjoy creating diverse work with stitch as the common thread. The exhibition will also feature work by internationally known textile artist and Embroiderers Guild member Nigel Cheney who is the current mentor to Visualise. On display is a diverse array of abstract, realistic and figurative art using a wide variety of media: paper, fabric (new, distressed and recycled) and found objects which are hand and machine stitched, or felted to create art inspired by both the natural world and the built environment. The exhibition includes textile art inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and 78 Derngate itself, with framed and small items for sale. The events of the amphitheatre – its wild beasts and enslaved fighters – are one of the most enduring aspects of Roman culture that still capture the public imagination today. This touring exhibition brings together some of the country's most important objects to tell the story of Britain's entertainment venues and the people who died to the roar of the crowd. It will reveal the violence of the arena, and the importance of spectacle within Roman culture. Highlights include the Colchester Vase loaned by Colchester Museums, which records an actual battle between two real gladiators, and the Hawkedon Helmet, the only confirmed piece of gladiatorial armour from Roman Britain. These iconic loans will be supported by a selection of other items that reveal the popularity of gladiators throughout Roman society. This tour is in partnership with Colchester and Ipswich Museums and is inspired by the recent exhibition at Colchester Castle, Gladiators: A Day at the Roman Games which featured British Museum loans. It will explore Roman spectacle in the local region, following in the footsteps of the gladiators who fought in the amphitheatres of Britain.

An ancient ceremony of thanksgiving at All Saints’ Church will commemorate Oak Apple Day and kickstart the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of Northampton. The annual civic ceremony, organised by Northampton Town Council and the Lord Lieutenancy, remembers the generosity of King Charles II, who donated over 1,000 tonnes of timber to reconstruct All Saints’ Church and halved the town’s taxes for seven years following the blaze in 1675. The event on Thursday, May 29 will see a detachment from the Honourable Artillery Company of Pikemen & Musketeers be accompanied by the ‘A’ Company LNR ACF Corps of Drums, with a parade and musket firing taking place on the piazza of All Saints’ Church around 12pm. The civic procession will then enter All Saints’ Church for a thanksgiving service led by Father Oliver Coss. The High Sheriff of Northamptonshire will then invite the Mayor to place an oak leaf wreath on the statue of Charles II, standing high on the church’s portico. A prayer of thanksgiving is then read by the Lord-Lieutenant, along with the playing of the National Anthem, a toast to the Mayor and a final blessing. Stu Vincent Photography

For the first time since 1881, the home of dinosaurs, Natural History Museum, is going on tour! Ever since they were first identified in the 1800s, dinosaurs have sparked the imagination of kids and adults alike and for the first time ever, the world renowned Natural History Museum have teamed up with Mark Thompson Productions to take you on a dinosaur adventure like no other. We’ll go on a pre-historic journey together to the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods and watch the life-like dinosaurs come alive right on stage! Not only that, we’ll also find out more about fossils, time scales and how our planet has changed over hundreds of millions of years. A lot of our bottomless brunches have ended up with impromptu Karaoke session, so we thought "why not dedicate a whole night to it?". We also thought it would be good to make it a bit of a free-for-all. Just turn up and pay for what you drink - just like a normal Karaoke Bar...obviously our bar will be rather eccentric but relaxed! We just ask that you let us know you'll be attending, so we know how many people are interested. We will provide the PA, mic and speakers plus the music (with words if you need them, of course!) and you simply do the rest...who knows, it may turn out to be 'simply the best'.
