EXPLORING THE SOCIETY'S COLLECTIONS. The society has important collections including butterflies, shells, eggs, sands, microscope slides, rocks, minerals and Northamptonshire fossils. This is a great opportunity to look at our extensive collections, to draw, study them or just appreciate their beauty. Also, if you wish to assist us conserving or documenting you would be welcome.

Presented by Voni Blu, independent fashion boutique in the heart of Northampton's Cultural Quarter offering an eclectic mix of contemporary fashion alongside a personal service to create a unique customer experience.

T CORONA BOREALIS by Gary Poyner, a famous variable star observer. This interesting variable star last flared up in 1946. Nicknamed the Blaze Star, it is a binary star and a recurrent nova 3,000 light-years away. It was first discovered in outburst in 1866. The science and the story by our well known speaker Gary Poyner. Guests and visitors are very welcome.

Nine creatives from the very popular, ever-expanding Open Studios are displaying their diverse range of work and techniques across the galleries, shop and gardens until Sunday October 5th.  Including glassware, paintings, photography, jewellery, woodwork and ceramics, there is something for everyone to appreciate. For centuries, landscape was considered an unworthy subject for serious artistic exploration. Northampton Museum & Art Gallery Until Sunday 4 October When landscape did appear in paintings, it was often relegated to the background—merely a setting for religious or historical scenes. This perception began to shift in the 17th century with the work of Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain. These pioneering artists crafted idealised rural vistas to illustrate the myths of Ancient Greece and Rome, imbuing natural elements with metaphorical meaning. Through their romantic and structured visions of the countryside, landscape painting began to gain recognition as a meaningful art form. It was not until the 19th century, however, that landscape truly came into its own. Artists such as J.M.W. Turner and John Constable redefined the genre, capturing the drama, emotion, and grandeur of the natural world. Their work affirmed landscape as a powerful subject in its own right—one that continues to inspire artists to this day. Drawing from the museum collections, this exhibition explores the evolution of landscape painting, where nature takes centre stage.

These dedicated individuals, from historians and collectors to community groups, have worked alongside the museum team to select objects and craft narratives. Their collaborative efforts ensure this exhibition truly reflects the breadth of Northamptonshire's heritage, guided by those who know their communities best.

Whether you shoot for passion or profession, this is a space to connect, learn, and be inspired. We’ve partnered with Saints Coffee, our favorite independent café, to host quarterly club nights in their cosy Giles Street venue—perfect for creatives to gather and share ideas. While we have some exciting plans, we believe you—the creative community—should help shape what this club becomes. Your input will guide how we grow, ensuring each event brings real value to photographers of all levels. In this session member David Swailes is going to talk about "Reigniting Your Passion in Photography". David is a talented and experienced wedding photographer, and we can't wait to hear his wisdom on this topic! The Manfreds, featuring original Manfred Mann members Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness, will once again bring their highly acclaimed Maximum Rhythm and Blues show to Royal & Derngate on Sat 4 October. Their incredible repertoire of hits includes the iconic songs Do Wah Diddy Diddy, Pretty Flamingo, 5-4-3-2-1, The Mighty Quinn, plus many more, including those from Paul Jones’ solo success and Tom McGuinness from his hugely successful group, McGuinness Flint. The band is delighted, and indeed privileged, to welcome their very special guest, Noel McCalla.
