Great Fire Symposium

The University of Northampton is delighted to host a symposium commemorating the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of Northampton on Friday 4 July from 10am-4pm.  The symposium will bring together individuals from across the country with an interest in the Great Fire and will be held in a hybrid format to allow individuals from across the globe to learn more about an event which shaped Northampton and its architecture. The following topics will be explored as part of the symposium: Pre-fire Streetscapes of Northampton with reference to the survey of the St Andrew’s Estate by Pierce – Speaker: Bill Franklin From the Drapery to the Peacock, from Corn Row to the Bell : exploring the pre-1675 Marketplace  – Speaker: Steve Holder Housing in Northampton before the Fire – Speaker: Deborah Hayter The Course of the Fire – Speaker: Tom Welsh The results of the Museum of London Archaeology survey of the St Mary’s Court House – Speaker: Mark Holmes Reconstructing the lost Church of All Saints – Speaker: Steve Holder Other contributors have been invited to join the symposium to include topics including responses to the fire and the emotional impact and legacy. Description Let’s go to the park – why greenspaces are important for Northampton’s residents. Thursday 18th September 2025, 5.00 – 6.30pm The Beehive Harborough Rd, Northampton NN2 8LR September’s Café Scientifique is presented by Dr Declan Ryan, Associate Professor in Physical Activity and Health at The University of Northampton https://www.northampton.ac.uk/research/research-institutes-and-centres/centre-for-health-sciences-and-services-chss/ Detailed Description This talk will examine Declan’s work with Northampton’s Active Quarter and the partnership of local people and organisations. Our parks have seen a decline in public funding over the past decade even though they are a vital place to support our local communities. To promote Northampton’s Parks, Northampton’s Active Quarter was formed as a partnership to make our greenspaces easier and more enjoyable to use. Collectively, the partnership has secured over Ł1,000,000 of funding for our local parks. Declan, from the University of Northampton, will talk about the partnership and how they are working with residents to make sure parks have a prominent role in peoples’ lives for years to come. The Students’ Union will be there all weekend so you can meet your Elected Officers, buy some UON merch, grab a coffee at the Engine Shed, and plan your Welcome Week activities. Time: From 10am

Single mothers, stigma and online dating: an FRDA exploration of modern relationships in the digital world. This talk will examine Sarah’s research around single mothers, stigma and online dating.? Modern relationships are increasingly influenced by the digital world and its content, which in itself is a rapidly evolving landscape.  The rise, development and popularity of dating apps has created limitless options in regards to connecting with people, with the potential of developing a romantic connection. The practical implications of this have seen an abundance of possibility although also the capacity for deception and a paradox of choice.  Within the demographic of single mothers who are seeking a romantic partner, the historical stigma, which remains present was explored within the research study through semi structured interviews.? Compassion and care on the agenda for major University conference

Making sure compassion-led and patient-centred care is the top priority for professionals will be discussed and shared at University of Northampton (UON) in March. UON’s second Care and Compassion Conference will see policy and thought leaders from home and away come to Waterside Campus to share insights and research on Tuesday 24 March, from 9:30am-4pm. Keynote speeches will come from Dementia UK CEO Dr Hilda Hayo and Emeritus Professor and child advocacy expert, Eunice Lumsden. There will also be research-based talks from UON postgraduate students Claire Davies (the impact of dementia on carers) and Brigitte Gouda (children’s oral health through school visits from dental nurses) and Deborah Babalola (health literacy). The closing keynote speech will be from Professor Sir Al Aynsley-Green, a leading expert on putting compassion and empathy at the heart of healthcare. His talk will cover why creating compassionate cultures is so important. You can hear some of his thoughts about this in the podcast he recorded with UON academics Associate Professor Dr Tracey Redwood and Senior Lecturer in Advanced Nursing, Win Hughes.
