78 Derngate: The Charles Rennie Mackintosh House – Heritage Open Days 2021

10 September 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Take a guided tour of 78 Derngate – an ordinary Georgian terraced house in Northampton – made extraordinary by the dramatic remodelling of the interiors by the famous Glaswegian designer and architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The visionary owner, local businessman W J Bassett-Lowke, commissioned Mackintosh to completely transform his marital home which is now open to visitors and guided tours are offered to those who wish to learn even more about both the owner and the designer. There are galleries, a shop and The Dining Room restaurant on site.

WJ Bassett-Lowke was the founder of a prosperous model-making business in Northampton and became an influential figure in the town. He was also recognised as one of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s most demanding, knowledgeable and progressive patrons and it is because of his vision and enthusiasm for modernity that Mackintosh was appointed to carry out extensive remodelling of this ordinary terraced home. Featuring his extraordinarily modern and still striking interiors, Mackintosh transformed 78 Derngate into a house of significant style and unique qualities. One of the most individual and creative designers of the 20th Century, Mackintosh is recognised as an architect of huge significance. This hidden gem of a building is now of international importance and the only house outside Scotland with so many original Mackintosh features.
