150TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT. Our anniversary lecture and the start of Great Big Green Week will be marked with a presentation by Dr. Joyce I. Nchom Humphrey, PhD., FRMetSoc who will give a talk entitled BUILDING THE ARK WHILE THE RAIN FALLS: Why Only Collective Action Can Save Us From Climate Breakdown.
EXPLORING THE SOCIETY'S COLLECTIONS. The society has important collections including butterflies, shells, sands, microscope slides, rocks, minerals and Northamptonshire fossils. This is a great opportunity to look at, draw, study or just appreciate their beauty. Also, if you wish to assist us conserving or documenting you would be welcome.
A UNIVERSE FROM SCRATCH by Julian Onions. Astronomy is mostly a visual and non-experimental science. We can only look at what is out there but can't bring stars and galaxies into the lab. However, we can build them inside computers and attempt to simulate them. In this talk, we will see how simulations can show us how the universe evolves and what we can do with them, and what areas we are still struggling to make models of. Guests are very welcome.
NORTHAMPTONSHIRE PHOTO PROJECT NIGHT - "PHOTOGRAPHING A SPECIFIC LOCATION THROUGHOUT THE YEAR". This is the evening where we look at members' photos taken for this year's Northamptonshire project.
IRONBRIDGE GORGE AND ITS MUSEUMS by Paul Hayes. The Ironbridge Gorge area in Shropshire was the birthplace of modern-day industry and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a pictorial tour of the area and the museums featuring their unique contents and stories.
ROTIFERS PART 2 by John Smith. A more detailed look at the structure and behaviour of these tiny freshwater animals. With video footage to help you distinguish them from algae and protozoa. Please bring water or sediment samples from ponds, streams or bird baths etc to explore if you can.
