GEOLOGICAL HEROES: JAMES HUTTON 1726-1797. James Hutton born and educated in Scotland was named the Father of Modern Geology as he sought to apply scientific principles to the world he observed, arguing that the world was older than previously understood. Bob Purser will introduce the principles he put forward and follow some of his epic journeys across Scotland.

EXPLORING THE SOCIETY'S COLLECTIONS. The society has a number of important collections including - butterflies, shells, eggs, sands, microscope slides, rocks, minerals and Northamptonshire fossils. This is a great opportunity to look at our extensive collections, to draw, study them or just appreciate their beauty. Also, if you wish to assist us conserving or documenting you would be welcome

MONOCHROME PHOTOGRAPHY by John Kilby. John will give us a talk on monochrome photography showing us some of his images and how to achieve the best results in this branch of photography.

FASCINATING FLORA by Seán Karley. Seán has travelled to many places around the world and seen a large range of flora. He presents an illustrated talk on some of the more interesting specimens he has seen.

WHAT’S GOING ON WITH THE WEATHER? Our monthly meeting to discuss all weather and climate issues past present and future. All are welcome.

BEACH SAND REVISITED by Ian Wilson. Last year we looked at beach sand and concentrated on the Foraminifera. This year we will look more closely at other organisms likely to be found in beach sand, molluscs, bryozoans, ostracods and others. There will be a range of sand samples to look at under the microscope and, hopefully you will be inspired to collect some sand if you are visiting a beach over the summer.

SET SUBJECT COMPETITION. This year there is only one round of this competition - subject this year is: “People at Work”. Invited Judge.

THE NNHS GLASS SLIDES OF NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. We will continue our fascinating tour through the glass slides taken by society members on trips and walks etc in the first quarter of the last century.

POLLEN by Mike Asquith. As well as being the cause of untold suffering for many over the summer, pollen can be a beautiful and varied subject for the microscope and making slides can be surprisingly easy. We will look at some pictures of pollen, and consider its structure and function before making slides from our own samples. Please bring flowers!
