For centuries, landscape was considered an unworthy subject for serious artistic exploration. Northampton Museum & Art Gallery Until Sunday 4 October When landscape did appear in paintings, it was often relegated to the background—merely a setting for religious or historical scenes. This perception began to shift in the 17th century with the work of Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain. These pioneering artists crafted idealised rural vistas to illustrate the myths of Ancient Greece and Rome, imbuing natural elements with metaphorical meaning. Through their romantic and structured visions of the countryside, landscape painting began to gain recognition as a meaningful art form. It was not until the 19th century, however, that landscape truly came into its own. Artists such as J.M.W. Turner and John Constable redefined the genre, capturing the drama, emotion, and grandeur of the natural world. Their work affirmed landscape as a powerful subject in its own right—one that continues to inspire artists to this day. Drawing from the museum collections, this exhibition explores the evolution of landscape painting, where nature takes centre stage.

The Horne Section’s Hit Show

They have two series of their own Channel 4 TV show, an iTunes-chart-topping podcast and now they’re tuning up their instruments once more to tour the country: it’s The Horne Section’s Hit Show! “Britain’s Funniest Band” (The Guardian) have made appearances on The Last Leg (Channel 4), Peter Crouch’s Year- Late Euros (BBC One),?they are Dictionary Corner regulars on?8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown?and the only band to ever host? Never Mind The Buzzcocks.  Separately, members of The Horne Section have performed with recording artists including Robbie Williams, Madness, Florence and the Machine, Amy Winehouse, George Ezra, Basement Jaxx, Disclosure and Noel Gallagher’s High-Flying Birds. Unruly, ridiculous, and surprisingly satisfying, the six-headed comedy band includes five outstanding musicians and one non-musical stand-up. There’ll be comedy, songs, enthusiastic dancing, and a lot of mucking about. A brand-new show from the hugely talented band and Alex Horne, the creator and co-host of the BAFTA and National Comedy Award winning Taskmaster.

Heritage Open Days 2025

Heritage Open Days is back from the 12th - 21st September and promises to be bigger and better than ever! What to expect Heritage Open Days is a fantastic opportunity to explore some of Northamptonshire’s unique historic buildings and sites. Many of these sites are usually restricted access or charge for entry – but for the event they will be open and free of charge, allowing you to find out about the area’s vibrant culture and heritage like never before! Heritage Buses Northampton’s beloved heritage double-decker buses are back, running from George Row on 20th and 21st September - a perfect way to explore the town in vintage style. Keep an eye on this page for route and timetable updates, and look out for printed schedules at Northampton Museum and library soon. The classic buses will also be returning to Daventry on 13th September, after being such a crowd-pleaser last year. Don’t miss your chance to hop on and enjoy the ride!
